Short Course 1: Earth Observation Data Cubes and Time Series Analysis of Images

This mini-course presents an introduction to the concepts of Earth observation data cubes and time series analysis of remote sensing images. The course will be both theoretical and  practical (Python and R language). Data cubes and software packages created by the Brazil Data Cube (BDC) project (http://brazildatacube.org/) will be presented and used. The BDC project is producing more than 2 petabytes of Analysis-Read Data (ARD) and multidimensional data cubes of medium spatial resolution satellite images, for the entire Brazilian territory. Besides that, the BDC project is developing software tools to deal with big data sets, to extract image time series from Earth observation (EO) data cubes and to produce land use and land cover information using image time series and machine learning. The BDC products will be presented alongside tools to access and discover its data, tools to extract time series and land cover trajectories and lastly the SITS package, a R toolkit for image time series classification using machine learning to produce land use and land cover maps. Besides that, the systems TerraCollect, BDCExplorer and BBC-Lab will be demonstrated.
