Mapping Flooding and Landslide for the May 2024 Disaster in Rio Grande do Sul

ABSTRACT: A considerable part of the Rio Grande do Sul state was hit by a disaster triggered by heavy  rains. The event lead to overflow of several basins, mostly on the ones flowing to Lagoa dos Patos. In  addition, hundreds of mass movements occurred in the same area. One of the disaster response was the  payment of Reconstruction Assistance for all families that lived in the directly affected areas. These areas  were mapped by many institutions and one official version was created. This thematic session goal is to  present the various efforts that were taken using Remote Sensing techniques and Mathematical Modeling on  Satellite images and Digital Elevation Models. The effort by the National Protection and Civil Defense  Secretariat (SEDEC) to incorporate field work inspections are included.
