ABSTRACT: In this thematic session, we will explore several applications of remote sensing in restoration initiatives that go beyond mandatory legal commitments. The first lecture will address the carbon market, highlighting how remote sensing can be used to monitor and validate carbon credits generated by voluntary restoration projects. The second lecture will discuss the importance of including degraded forests in restoration projects, discussing techniques and approaches for estimating forest degradation using remote sensing. The third lecture will address the need and importance of considering biodiversity and ecosystem services in restoration projects, presenting remote sensing techniques that allow for the assessment and monitoring of biodiversity. Finally, the last lecture will address the emerging jurisdictional carbon market in the Brazilian Legal Amazon, providing an insight into how Remote Sensing can assist in the development of public policies for voluntary restoration. With these discussions, we hope to promote a comprehensive and interdisciplinary dialogue that inspires new approaches and partnerships in restoration projects, leveraging the use of remote sensing technologies to address current and future challenges in ecosystem conservation and recovery.
