ABSTRACT: The session "Towards Smarter Managed Forests: Remote Sensing Applications" will explore the potential of remote sensing for optimizing the management of planted forests. The session will address different management stages, from early problem detection to strategic decision-making, focusing on practical applications. Discussions will cover the use of sensors and image processing to monitor forest health, including the identification of areas with water stress, pests, and diseases. LiDAR technologies will be explored for conducting accurate forest inventories, providing detailed information on forest structure. The detection of vegetation changes over time, using time series of satellite imagery and machine learning algorithms, will be discussed. Finally, the session will explore the integration of remote sensing data into Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to support decision-making in various forest management activities.
