Identification and Monitoring of Urban and Peri-Urban Vegetation Using Remote Sensing

Type:

Thematic Session

Category:

Monitoring Urban and Peri-Urban Vegetation

Place:

Room 6

Date and time:

11:30 to 13:40 on 04/15/2025

ABSTRACT: Cities are increasingly dense population centers where sustainability challenges are experienced daily. In  this context, urban vegetation deserves attention for its potential to provide ecosystem services and nature-based solutions.  Its contributions include microclimate regulation, stormwater drainage, particulate matter retention, provision of habitats  for wildlife, and spaces for leisure and well-being. Urban vegetation also adds real estate value and enhances the beauty of  cities. Public policies, private investments, collective actions, or even individual initiatives require consistent data to  address urban issues. Maximizing the presence of vegetation in cities requires detailed knowledge of its coverage, location,  relationship with the built environment, and phytophysiological and phenological characteristics. High-resolution spatial  or temporal data, obtained from orbital or aerial sensors, whether passive or active, combined with traditional or  innovative classification and data generation methodologies, are essential for understanding and measuring this potential.  This thematic session aims to present products, data, and knowledge about urban vegetation generated through Remote  Sensing, contributing to the debate on urban solutions and stimulating new possibilities for data creation and use.
