ABSTRACT: The Pampa biome, recognized as such only in 2004, occurs in Rio Grande do Sul, Uruguay and Argentina. It is predominantly covered by grasslands, but there are also riparian forests and forests, which are home to numerous ecosystem services and biodiversity. The use of native fields for livestock maintained traditions and the preservation of the biome, which, unfortunately, are being converted by agricultural and silvicultural practices. According to recent data from PRODES (Project for the Estimation of Suppression of Native Vegetation) PAMPA, part of INPE's BIOMASBR Program, available on the TerraBrasilis Platform, approximately 59% of the area of the Brazilian Pampa biome has already had its native vegetation suppressed and converted to other uses. These data reveal the urgency of mapping and monitoring the Pampa biome, with a focus on possible strategies for its management and conservation. Remote sensing is the technology capable of providing historical and almost real-time information on the roofs of the Pampa, motivating the gathering of studies such as those that will be presented in this Thematic Session. The objectives are to disseminate knowledge about this biome, inspiring other initiatives to value and conserve grasslands.
