ABSTRACT: Advances in observational and computational technologies are transforming our ability to study the ocean and coastal zone into an increasingly integrated and dynamic approach. This improved understanding of the ocean is becoming increasingly important in our economically and geopolitically interconnected world, informing decision-making on vital issues. Located in the north of Brazil, between the states of Amapá and Rio Grande do Norte, the Brazilian Equatorial Margin has significant oil potential and a range of opportunities that could create jobs, increase revenues and contribute to regional and national development. The region has potential for offshore wind energy, intensive shipping, fishing and tourism. However, sensitive environmental and social issues need to be considered in an integrated manner. Passive and active remote sensors installed on satellites, aircraft and other platforms provide valuable information on water composition and related environmental parameters. This session will present the state of the art in coastal and ocean remote sensing applications and how they can contribute to the spatio-temporal variability and environmental characterisation of this vast and complex oceanic region. The aim is to improve our understanding of environmental and ecological processes at different scales.
